Climate Change and the Resilience of Indigenous Women: The Power of Storey Gardens
7
Climate change is one of the most pressing global crises, and paradoxically, indigenous women are among the least contributors to this environmental challenge. Yet, they bear the brunt of its devastating impacts. Long droughts and heavy rains have disrupted traditional farming practices, leaving many women helpless when it comes to providing nutritious food for their families. These unpredictable weather patterns threaten food security, health, and overall well-being in their communities.

In partnership with JICA, a transformative initiative has been introduced—distributing storey gardens to groups of women within these communities. These innovative vertical gardens enable women to grow organic vegetables in small, manageable spaces, regardless of external weather conditions. With storey gardens, women can cultivate fresh, nutritious produce consistently, even when climate extremes threaten their traditional crops.

This project is more than just growing food—it's about empowering indigenous women to become resilient in the face of climate change. These gardens will provide sustainable nutrition for their children and families, reduce reliance on external food sources, and foster self-sufficiency. As climate realities intensify, initiatives like these are vital for building resilient communities where women lead the way in adaptation and sustainable development.
